Douro River

The navigability of the Douro River has always been of great importance, mainly for economic reasons. There was the need to transport wine to Gaia, which resulted in the appearance of a unique vessel, the “rabelo” boat, specially adapted to this irregular river.
Today, we can still see some “rabelo” boats that, besides decorating the river, sporadically take trips up the Douro, which sparks the curiosity and admiration of all who see it pass.
These boats are linked to the Northern Area’s Tourism.
